Professor Dr. mult. Wassilios E. Fthenakis is President of the Didacta Association of the
German Education Industry. He is a renowned expert in education and family research
and a popular political consultant.
For over three decades, he served as Director of the State Institute of Pre-School
Education and Research in Munich, and he has taught at the universities of Munich, Berlin,
Augsburg, Newcastle upon Tyne, Bolzano and more in the topics of education,
psychology, anthropology and family research.
Professor Fthenakis has made innovative contributions to the fields of education and
family research. He was one of the key figures in initiating research into the role of the
father in family life; in addition, he has conducted longitudinal studies into family
development and made important contributions to the fields of divorce research and family
During recent years, Professor Fthenakis has developed new curricula and proposals for
how to reform educational systems in order to best meet the needs of children in the 21st
century. His current project involves developing a consistent model for the qualification of
professional educators as well as a reform of the entire education system – from a child's
birth to his or her graduation.
Professor Fthenakis has authored and co-published more than 100 scientific books and
written more than 150 scientific articles published in internationally acclaimed journals.
For his scientific achievements and social engagement, Professor Fthenakis has been
awarded the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bavarian
Order of Merit, the Hessian Order of Merit Award and the Kerschensteiner Medal. Two
foreign universities have awarded him an honorary doctorate, and the Moscow State
Pedagogical University gave him the title of Professor Honoris Causa.
